You’ve got the vision, you’ve got the designs, and you’re ready to scale your apparel business. Direct-to-film (DTF) transfers are the ultimate game-changer for crafters and small business owners alike. But let’s be real: nothing kills the vibe faster than a gang sheet that won’t upload correctly or prints blurry.
At Pixel Print Apparel, we want your prints to peel like butter and look absolutely stunning. Our online gang sheet builder is designed to be your best friend, but even the best tools have a few “rules of the road.” If you’re struggling to get your layout just right, don’t sweat it!
Here are the 8 most common mistakes that can ruin your DTF gang sheets and exactly how to avoid them so you can get back to creating.
1. Low Resolution: The “Blurry” Trap
Resolution is the heartbeat of a great print. If you upload a tiny, pixelated image and stretch it to fit a 12-inch shirt, it’s going to look “fuzzy” or “blocky.”
The Fix: Always aim for 300 DPI (Dots Per Inch) at the final print size. Our online gang sheet builder makes this easy with a built-in visual feedback system. When you place an image, look at the border:
- Green Border: You’re golden! This is high resolution and will look crisp.
- Yellow Border: Proceed with caution. It might look okay, but it won’t be “pro-level” sharp.
- Red Border: Stop right there! Your design is too low-res. Shrink it down or get a higher-quality file.
Warning: Canva “false positives.” If you upload a low-quality image into Canva and then export it as a high-res file, our DPI checker can give you a false positive. The file may show 300 DPI because the export dimensions are large, but the original artwork still wasn’t high quality, so the print won’t be either. Always start with the best quality source image possible!
2. Backgrounds: Say No to White Boxes
We see it all the time: a beautiful design that prints with a giant white rectangle around it. This happens because the file was saved as a JPG or a PNG with a non-transparent background. Remember, in DTF, the printer treats white pixels as white ink.
The Fix: Ensure your designs are transparent PNGs. If you’ve got a design you love but it has a pesky background, use our AI Background Remover tool right inside the builder. One click and: poof!: the background is gone, leaving only your amazing artwork.

3. Overlapping Designs: The “Blue Indicator” Warning
In an effort to save money, it’s tempting to squeeze designs as close as possible. But if they overlap even a tiny bit, they’ll print as one messy blob.
The Fix: Watch for the blue overlap indicator in our builder. If two designs touch or cross over, the builder will alert you. Move, Rotate, or Resize your designs until they have their own personal space. Think of it as social distancing for your graphics!
4. Tiny Margins: Give Yourself Room to Breathe
If you pack your designs right up against each other without any gaps, you’re going to have a nightmare of a time cutting them apart. You don’t want to accidentally slice into your “Class of 2026” logo while trying to cut out a “Schools Out” design.
The Fix: Maintain at least a 0.25″ margin between every design. This gives you plenty of “safe space” for your scissors or rotary cutter. Efficiency is great, but a ruined design is expensive!

5. Incorrect File Format
While we love creativity, our builders are PNG fans. PNG is the preferred format because our builder automatically removes transparent pixels around the image to make sure you get the exact size you ordered. Other file types like SVG and PDF don’t do that the same way. They can include empty transparent areas in the final dimensions, which can throw off your sizing.
The Fix: Stick to PNG. It’s the best option for DTF because it handles transparency cleanly and helps our builder size your artwork more accurately. If you’re working in Illustrator or Photoshop, just Export as PNG and make sure “Use Artboards” is checked if you have extra junk floating around your workspace.
6. Semi-Transparent “Ghost” Pixels
Sometimes a design looks fine on your screen, but it has a faint “glow” or soft edges that are actually semi-transparent pixels. In DTF, these pixels often get a white underbase, which can look like a weird white “halo” or “dust” around your print.
The Fix: Use our Transparent Warning feature. It highlights areas that aren’t 100% opaque. If you see “ghosting,” go back to your design software and make those edges hard and clean. You want rich color and sharp edges, not a muddy halo.
7. Distorted Images: The “Funhouse Mirror” Effect
When you’re trying to fit one last design into a small gap, it’s tempting to grab the side handle and “squish” it. Don’t do it! Your customers will notice when their favorite cat illustration looks like it’s been through a trash compactor.
The Fix: Lock your aspect ratio. In our builder, always scale from the corners to keep your proportions perfect. If it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t fit: either resize the whole thing or move it to a different spot.
8. Choosing the Right Tool: Manual vs. Auto Build
If you have fifty different designs, trying to place them manually can be a headache. On the flip side, if you have one design you need fifty copies of, placing them one by one is a waste of time.
The Fix: Choose the right workflow.
- Upload Individual Images: Best for when you have a few designs and want to choose the quantity for each.
- Build Your Own Gang Sheet: Best for pros who want total control over every millimeter of the layout.
- Upload a Premade Sheet: If you already built it in Photoshop, just drop the final file and go!
Ready to Press? Follow the Golden Rules!
Once your perfect gang sheet arrives (and it will arrive fast!), you need to press it correctly. Our DTF transfers are designed for a hot peel, which feels as smooth as butter.
Follow these instructions for a flawless finish:
- Set your heat press to 280 degrees F.
- Press for exactly 8 seconds.
- Peel it while it’s still hot for that amazing, soft-hand feel!
